abstract = "The SRTM data has been used in many areas of knowledge, however,
the c-band does not allow the correct representation of the ground
surface by the DEM. Artificial features can appear in regions
where abrupt coverage changes are observed, such as the contact
areas like forest and deforestation, often precluding the use of
this data. In order to reduce specifically the deforestation
effect a new method was developed in which the elevation gap
between forest and deforestation coverages is reduced by raising
every SRTM-DEM pixel inside the deforestation areas by a variable
value. These variable values are obtained by the interpolation of
sample height differences collected along the boundaries between
areas of forest and deforestation. Forest areas and deforestation
are identified from Landsat images with the date close to the SRTM
flight. The corrected SRTM data was validated using a finer
resolution reference DEM obtained by p-band interferometry, which
was considered to represent the terrain topography. The results
showed that the method successfully reduced the deforestation
                         effects on the SRTM data.",
